Nude Cruises: Rules, Big Nude Boat, and How to Choose One

Nude cruises are full-ship charters or small-yacht sailings where nudity is allowed on deck at sea, clothing is required in port and at dinner, and the whole ship follows one set of house rules. The biggest one, the Big Nude Boat from Bare Necessities, sails next on Norwegian Jewel from Miami in February 2027.

Here is how I would decide whether a nude cruise is for you and how I would plan one. This is a guide to rules, logistics, and tradeoffs, not a sales pitch.

My quick take

If you want the classic naturist experience with a big-ship feel, book the Big Nude Boat and treat it like any other NCL cruise with a different dress code. If you want quiet coves and a small group, a Katarina Line naturist week out of Split is the better fit.

The most important decision is not the ship, it is the category of cruise. Naturist charters like Bare Necessities ban sexual behavior in public and welcome solo travelers, while lifestyle charters like Bliss Cruise are couples-only and are built around a very different crowd.

If you are still weighing an adults-only ship against a regular ship with adult areas, my adults-only cruise lines comparison covers that first step. A nude cruise is one more notch along the same scale: every guest on board has opted in to the same environment.

The quick facts

  • What it is: a full-ship charter or small-yacht sailing where nudity is allowed on board at sea, with clothing required in port and at dinner.
  • Biggest operator: Bare Necessities, running clothing-optional charters since 1990, per its own site.
  • Next big sailing: Big Nude Boat 2027 on Norwegian Jewel, Miami round trip, February 15 to 26, 2027, with a private call at Great Stirrup Cay.
  • Small-ship option: Katarina Lineโ€™s 8-day naturist cruise from Split, where nudity is โ€œwelcome and expected on board except when in port and during meal times.โ€
  • Who it suits: adults only (Bare Necessities requires 18+, Bliss requires 21+); solo travelers fit naturist charters better than lifestyle charters.
  • Cost basis: priced per person by cabin category like a normal cruise, with charter pricing set by the operator, not the cruise line.
  • What to verify: the current guide book for your sailing, since towel, photo, and port rules are enforced and can change by charter.

What a nude cruise actually is

The ship is a regular cruise ship, usually chartered in full by a naturist travel company. The cruise line still runs the ship, the crew, and the food, while the charter company sets the conduct rules and fills every cabin with its own guests.

Naturism, the philosophy behind these sailings, is non-sexual social nudity. Bare Necessities puts it this way on its site: people who can leave their clothing behind in a social setting are more able to be themselves.

Naturist charters versus lifestyle charters

Naturist charters (Bare Necessities, Katarina Lineโ€™s naturist weeks) prohibit fondling, overt sexual activity, and solicitation in public areas. Bare Necessities states that violations mean dismissal from the ship without refund or transportation help.

Lifestyle charters such as Bliss Cruise are marketed as couples-only sailings for adults 21 and over. They are not naturist cruises, and I would not book one expecting the calm, towel-on-the-lounger atmosphere of the Big Nude Boat.

LGBTQ+ and specialty sailings

Several LGBTQ+ yacht and big-ship operators are sometimes described as clothing-optional, but their official pages do not confirm a current policy, so I leave them out rather than guess.

Naturist charters are open to everyone. If inclusivity matters to you, read the operatorโ€™s conduct page and ask directly before you put down a deposit.

The Big Nude Boat: Bare Necessities on Norwegian Jewel

Bare Necessities has been chartering ships since 1990 and calls its flagship sailing the Big Nude Boat. The 2026 edition sailed on Norwegian Pearl from Miami in February 2026 to Jamaica, Aruba, Curaรงao, Bonaire, and Great Stirrup Cay.

The 2027 edition moves to Norwegian Jewel, sailing round trip from Miami on February 15 to 26, 2027. According to the Bare Necessities guide book, the route includes Great Stirrup Cay, San Juan, Tortola, St. Kitts, Antigua, and Samanรก in the Dominican Republic.

The house rules that matter

  • When you can be nude: after departure and an onboard announcement, while the ship is at sea or anchored. Whenever the ship is alongside a pier, everyone stays fully dressed, balconies included.
  • Dining: clothing is required for all meals in the dining rooms, and bathrobes do not count. Casual attire is fine.
  • Towels: always sit on a towel or an article of clothing when bare bottomed or in a thong. That applies in your stateroom, on deck, and on excursions.
  • Photos: no photos or video of anyone without their express consent. Pools and dance venues are designated no-photo zones, and devices used there can be confiscated.
  • Embarkation day: you check in dressed like any other cruise passenger, because the terminal is a public port facility.

Choosing a cabin on Norwegian Jewel

Jewel is a mid-sized Norwegian ship, and a balcony matters more on this charter than on most, since it gives you a private sun spot once the ship is at sea. Before you pick a deck, read my Norwegian Jewel cabins to avoid guide, which flags the noisy rooms under the pool deck and near the anchor.

My rule on any charter: pick the cabin by what is above and below it, not by the fare difference alone. Charter pricing is set by Bare Necessities, not by NCL, so check the operatorโ€™s pricing page for current rates and early-booking codes.

Great Stirrup Cay: the private island day

Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian Cruise Lineโ€™s private island in the Bahamas, open only to NCL guests. Per the NCL Great Stirrup Cay page, complimentary dining, beach access, and the Great Life Lagoon pool are included, with Silver Cove villas as a paid upgrade.

Bare Necessities lists its 2027 call there as an exclusive stop for the charter, from morning to early evening. Because the ship is the only one in, the charterโ€™s at-sea rules apply on the island, which is why this is the stop most guests look forward to.

NCL is adding the Great Tides Water Park in September 2026 and already has cabana and Silver Cove upgrades for sale. If you want shade and a guaranteed lounger, book an upgrade early through the charter operator rather than hoping for space on the day.

Small-ship naturist cruises in Croatia

Katarina Line runs an 8-day Naturist Cruise Dalmatia, round trip from Split, calling at Puฤiลกฤ‡a, Korฤula, Lastovo, Vis, Biลกevo, Stari Grad, Bol, and ล olta. Its own listing states that nudity is welcome and expected on board except in port and at meal times.

These are small motor yachts, with one guest review on the Katarina Line page describing about 29 passengers. Expect swim stops at quiet coves, visits to the Blue and Green Caves, and evenings in historic harbor towns, dressed.

The tradeoff is simple: you give up a pool deck, a theater, and specialty restaurants in exchange for privacy and scenery. For a first naturist trip with a partner, I think the Croatia option is the lower-pressure introduction.

Sun, health, and etiquette

Sun protection is the real risk

Skin that never sees the sun burns fast, and a bad burn on day two ruins a twelve-day cruise. The CDC sun safety guidance calls for broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, reapplied after swimming, sweating, or toweling off and after about two hours outdoors.

The CDC also recommends shade during the strongest hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daylight time in the continental US), a hat with a brim all the way around, and sunglasses that block UVA and UVB. On a nude cruise I would go higher than SPF 15 and treat the first two sea days as gradual exposure.

Towels and hygiene

The towel rule is the one piece of etiquette every operator enforces. Carry one with you whenever you leave your cabin undressed, and lay it down before you sit, whether that is a lounger, a bar stool, or a tender seat.

Normal cruise hygiene still applies: wash hands before meals and report illness early. Nothing about a nude charter changes the shipโ€™s usual sanitation routine.

Social conduct

Look people in the eye, keep your hands to yourself, and ask before taking any photo. Bare Necessities spells out that inappropriate touching and solicitation lead to removal, and that standard is typical across naturist charters.

You are never required to be nude. Plenty of guests wear a wrap or shorts for the first day, and nobody will comment.

What to pack for a nude cruise

You still need real clothes: embarkation day, every port day, every dinner in the dining room, and the captainโ€™s reception all require them. Start from my cruise packing list builder and then cut the daytime outfits down.

  • Two or three quick-dry towels or sarongs: one to sit on, one for the pool, one drying.
  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen, plenty of it: you will use far more than on a regular cruise, and ship shops charge ship prices.
  • A full-brim hat and UV sunglasses: straight from the CDC checklist.
  • Sandals or water shoes: deck surfaces get hot and island paths are rocky.
  • Port and dinner outfits: casual wear for dining rooms, smart casual for specialty restaurants and the reception, and one outfit per port day.
  • Passport and documents: the 2027 route calls at several countries, so carry a passport valid for the whole trip.

A light cover-up that goes on in seconds is the most useful item on the list. Ships hit port early, and the โ€œfully dressed alongsideโ€ rule starts the moment the lines go out.

How Iโ€™d choose

First-timer, a little nervous

Book the Big Nude Boat with a balcony cabin. You get a private retreat, three sea days to ease in, and a ship big enough that nobody notices whether you are dressed or not.

Couple who wants quiet and scenery

Take the Katarina Line week from Split in late summer or early autumn. The water is warm, the coves are empty, and the group is small enough to feel like a house party rather than a resort.

Solo traveler

Go naturist, not lifestyle: Bliss and similar charters are couples-only by policy. Ask Bare Necessities about single occupancy pricing before booking, and read my solo cruise planning guide for the general cabin and cost math.

Looking for a party

A naturist charter is the wrong product. Lifestyle operators exist for that crowd, and mixing the two expectations is how people end up removed from the ship.

What can change

Charter ships change almost every year: the Big Nude Boat used Norwegian Pearl in 2026 and uses Norwegian Jewel in 2027. Itineraries, private island calls, and even the departure port are set by the operator and can be revised before sailing.

Nudity is never allowed in port or in the terminal, regardless of destination. Local laws apply ashore, so treat every port day as a normal, dressed cruise day unless the operatorโ€™s excursion description says otherwise.

Fares change with the ship, the cabin, and the year, so check the operatorโ€™s current pricing and guide book before you book.

Quick answers

Do you have to be nude on a nude cruise?

No. Nudity is optional at sea, and clothing is required in port, at embarkation, and in the dining rooms.

What ship is the Big Nude Boat 2027 on?

Norwegian Jewel, sailing round trip from Miami on February 15 to 26, 2027, per Bare Necessities.

Are nude cruises sexual?

Naturist charters are not. Bare Necessities prohibits overt sexual activity and solicitation in public areas, and removes guests who break the rule.

Can solo travelers book a nude cruise?

Yes on naturist charters. Lifestyle charters like Bliss Cruise are couples-only.

Can I take photos on board?

Only with the express consent of anyone in the frame. Pools and dance venues are no-photo zones, and devices can be confiscated.

What is the minimum age?

Bare Necessities requires guests to be at least 18. Bliss Cruise requires 21.

Final word

Nude cruises are more structured than their reputation suggests: towel rules, photo bans, and dressed port days are enforced, and that structure is what makes them comfortable. Pick the category that matches what you want, book a balcony if you can, and pack more sunscreen than you think you need.
