Is Norwegian Cruise Line good? My short answer is yes for travelers who want flexible dining, no formal nights, and a bundle that folds drinks and specialty meals into the fare, and no for travelers who want a quiet, traditional ship where the price you see is the price you pay.

NCL is a good fit if you like eating when you feel like it, packing light, and having a drink package and a few specialty dinners already built into the booking. What Freestyle Cruising means in practice

Freestyle Cruising is Norwegian’s name for a ship with no assigned dinner seating, no fixed dining times, and no formal nights. You pick a restaurant, show up when you are hungry, and wear what you would wear to a nice resort restaurant on land.

The tradeoff is that popular restaurants fill up at peak hours, so I book specialty dinners and the main shows in the app before I sail. If you like the ritual of the same table and the same waiter every night, this is the first reason NCL may not be the line for you.

Dining: what is free and what is not

Your fare covers the main dining rooms, the buffet, and a handful of casual spots that vary by ship. Specialty restaurants such as the steakhouse, the Italian restaurant, and sushi carry a cover charge or an a la carte price unless you use the meals included in your bundle.

Per the Free at Sea terms, the bundle includes one specialty meal on a 2 to 4 night cruise, two on 5 to 6 nights, three on 7 to 8 nights, and four on 9 nights or longer. Each meal allows up to three appetizers and desserts per guest on top of the entree, which is generous compared to the old rules.

Dress code

NCL’s own FAQ describes the look as “relaxed resort” and says outright that there is no formal night. Shirts and shoes are required in restaurants, graphics should be respectful, and swimwear and very short shorts are not allowed at dinner.

The fleet: which NCL ship you are really choosing

Asking whether Norwegian Cruise Line is good is really asking which ship you will be on, because the fleet spans nearly thirty years of design. NCL’s fleet page lists 20 ships in service, and I group them into three tiers when I plan.

The new ships: Prima, Viva, Aqua, and Luna

Norwegian Prima (2022) and Norwegian Viva (2023) carry about 3,195 guests each, and Norwegian Aqua (2025) and Norwegian Luna (2026) are slightly larger at 3,565, per NCL’s fleet page. Aqua’s page highlights Ocean Boulevard, Infinity Beach, a Glow Court LED sports floor, and what NCL calls the first hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide at sea.

These are the ships to book if you want outdoor space, newer cabins, and the widest choice of suites, and they also carry the highest fares.

The big ships: Breakaway, Breakaway Plus, and Epic

Breakaway, Getaway, Escape, Joy, Bliss, and Encore all carry 3,776 to 4,218 guests, and Norwegian Epic carries 4,070, per the fleet page. These are the ships with the largest waterparks, the go-kart tracks on Joy, Bliss, and Encore, and the longest list of restaurants and bars.

They are also the ships where peak-hour crowds are most noticeable, so I use them for Caribbean and Alaska weeks where the ship itself is part of the plan. Every one of them has been refurbished between 2022 and 2025, per the fleet page, so the older dates are less of a worry than they look.

The mid-size ships and Pride of America

Dawn, Gem, Jade, Jewel, Pearl, Star, Sky, Spirit, and Sun carry roughly 1,900 to 2,400 guests and date from 1998 to 2007. They have fewer restaurants and no waterpark, but they dock in smaller ports and feel calmer, which is why NCL uses them for Europe, Alaska, Canada, and longer repositioning routes.

Pride of America is the one-off: per NCL’s ship page, it is the only cruise ship sailing year-round from Honolulu, visiting four Hawaiian islands in seven days with two overnights and no sea days. If Hawaii is the goal, nothing else in the industry does that route the same way.

Cabins, the Haven, and solo Studios

NCL sells the usual inside, oceanview, balcony, and Club Balcony Suite categories, and the cabins are on the compact side on the older ships. The Haven

The Haven is NCL’s keycard-access suite area with its own restaurant, lounge, courtyard pool, and sun deck, plus butler and concierge service. Norwegian Aqua’s page lists Three-Bedroom Duplex Suites as a new Haven category, and the Haven on the newest ships takes up the top forward decks.

It is the right buy if you want a quiet ship within a loud one, and the wrong buy if you plan to spend your days at the main pool anyway. Haven and suite guests pay the higher $25 daily service charge, per NCL’s FAQ.

Studio cabins for solo travelers

Studios are small cabins priced for one guest, with a private Studio Lounge that serves complimentary coffee, espresso, and snacks through the day. Per NCL’s solo stateroom page, they are on Aqua, Bliss, Breakaway, Encore, Epic, Escape, Getaway, Prima, Viva, and Pride of America, and Pride of America is the one ship without the lounge.

NCL also sells solo inside, oceanview, and balcony cabins priced for one across most of the fleet, which is the biggest reason for a solo traveler to pick NCL.

What the fare really covers

The base fare buys the cabin, main dining and buffet meals, the theater shows, the pools, the fitness center, and the kids’ clubs. Everything else is an add-on, and NCL’s model is to bundle the most common add-ons and then charge gratuities on the bundle.

The Free at Sea bundle

For bookings from November 5, 2025 onward, NCL’s offer is called Free at Sea again, replacing the More at Sea package sold during 2025. Per the offer page, guests 21 and over get an unlimited open bar on board and at Great Stirrup Cay, guests 3 to 20 get soda and juice, and every guest gets 150 minutes of Starlink Wi-Fi.

The $50 shore excursion credit applies at every port but only to the first guest on the reservation, and the third and fourth guests in a cabin sail free. The catch is in the terms: the page states that guests must prepay the gratuities on the package, so read the final total before you celebrate the “free” part.

Service charges and other add-ons

The daily service charge is $20 per person per day for Club Balcony Suites and below, and $25 for suites and The Haven, per NCL’s FAQ as of August 2026, with an extra 4.275% tax on Hawaii sailings. NCL says you can adjust it at guest services if a service problem is not resolved.

Entertainment, kids, and the onboard day

NCL’s theaters run licensed productions on the bigger ships, and Aqua’s page lists a Prince tribute concert called Revolution as its headline show. The smaller ships rely on production shows, comedians, and live music, so set your expectations by ship size.

Families

Per NCL’s youth program page, Guppies covers ages 6 months to 3 years with a parent present, Splash Academy covers 3 to 12, and Entourage covers 13 to 17, and all are complimentary. Late-night fun zone hours cost extra.

Couple who wants quiet

Choose a mid-size ship on a port-heavy route, such as Jade or Star in Europe, or a Haven suite on a newer ship if the budget allows. Skip the big ships in school holiday weeks.

Family with kids

Price a balcony for four on Escape, Bliss, Encore, or Aqua with the third and fourth guest offer, then compare it to two connecting insides. The clubs are free either way, so the decision comes down to how much balcony time you will actually use.

When NCL is not the best choice

If you want a true all-inclusive price, a luxury line will cost more up front but removes the add-on math entirely. If you want formal nights, fixed dining, and a traditional ship feel, Holland America, Princess, or Cunard deliver that better than NCL does.

If your priority is the biggest ship with the most activities, Royal Caribbean’s largest ships out-scale anything NCL has. And if you are sensitive to crowds, avoid the 4,000 guest NCL ships in peak weeks regardless of line.
